The Power of Lifelong Learning: Staying Ahead in Workplace Communication
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a morning session with Auðnast on how to ensure effective communication between employees. Even though I have been working in this field for 18 years, I continue to learn something new every time I engage in discussions like this. It was a fantastic morning filled with insightful conversations and valuable takeaways from experts in the field.
Ragnhildur Bjarkadóttir, the meeting moderator, introduced the concept of „wrinkled and demanding communication“ (krumpuð og krefjandi samskipti). She also reminded us of a fundamental truth—our brains are not designed to make us happy. This was an interesting perspective that sparked discussions on how we navigate complex workplace interactions.
Carmen Maja Valencia emphasized the importance of being proactive in communication and the critical role of training managers. Without proactive leadership, workplace challenges can escalate, making it essential to equip managers with the right tools to foster a healthy work environment.
Unnur Ásta Bergsteinsdóttir, a lawyer specializing in workplace harassment, provided key legal insights. She highlighted our legal obligation to act against workplace harassment, underscoring the significant mental and financial consequences if we fail to address these issues. She also clarified the difference between formal and informal investigations—an area that often confuses people. One key learning point for me was her reminder that every time we use our procedures; we need to revise and refine them to ensure they remain effective.
Hildur Arnars Ólafsdóttir from JBT Marel reinforced a crucial aspect of leadership: managers must know their employees as individuals. She stressed the importance of having difficult conversations face-to-face rather than relying on email. This is advice I have often given and followed myself, and it was refreshing to hear it reinforced.
Andri Hauksteinn Oddsson spoke about psychological safety, posing a thought-provoking question: „Are you working in a place where you feel you belong?“ He pointed out that the key to psychological safety lies in organizational structure, communication, and management. His insights reinforced the idea that creating a culture of trust and open dialogue is fundamental to a thriving workplace.
Attending sessions like these reminds me why continuous learning is so important. No matter how experienced we are, there is always something new to discover, perspectives to broaden, and best practices to refine. If we fail to react and prevent issues in workplace communication, the consequences can be severe.
This morning was not only a learning opportunity but also a confirmation that we are on the right track. Engaging with like-minded professionals and exchanging knowledge helps us all do better. Lifelong learning is not just a choice; it is a necessity for those of us striving to create better workplaces.
So, what have you learned recently that has reshaped your perspective?
