Keep calm and love HR

Why do I love working in HR?

Sometimes, I think HR is one of those jobs that really keeps you on your toes. It’s a strange mix of strategy, people, and problem-solving, and honestly, days like today are exactly why I love it. It’s not just about the policies or the processes (even though I love them) —it’s about making a real difference, solving challenges, and trying to keep it all together (often while juggling multiple things at once).

Today was one of those days that felt both busy and incredibly rewarding. I had 11 meetings scheduled, and let me tell you, I started the morning feeling a bit overwhelmed, probably told everyone I met how many meetings I had (trying to calm myself and ensure myself that I will survive). By the time I reached my fifth cup of coffee, asking Service desk for candy, stalking the vending machine, I found myself running on adrenaline and getting into the groove.

My day was packed with meaningful conversations with managers, interviews where applicants took on exciting project tasks and analyzing data about sickness absence and employee engagement (It´s amazing what an excel sheet with correlation´s can do for me).

Later this week, on Thursday, I will have the opportunity to discuss the results from our engagement survey with all my managers, set goals and help them find ways to boost engagement in their teams. I worked on my slides, they’re not done yet, but at least I made progress! I am also excited about a project I and our consultant will have them work on in relation to communication, but I don´t want to spoil it, so more on that at another time.

It’s days like these—the variety, the people, the challenges, the progress —that remind me why I love working in HR. It’s not always easy, and sometimes overwhelming, but it’s never, ever boring.

p.s. this all happened while Iceland was literally shaking with earthquakes (this time it´s Bárðarbunga) and the rain was pouring down like a waterfall going sideways. Iceland, with its unpredictable weather, sure knows how to add some drama to the mix.

How was your day?
